PRESCRIPTION PAIN MEDICATION ERROR/
WRONGFUL DEATH
WRONGFUL DEATH
Doctors are trained to prescribe medications consistent with the dosage guidelines set forth by the drug manufacturers. When a doctor fails to follow these guidelines, the result can be catastrophic.
Fentanyl is an extremely powerful narcotic pain medication. It is typically prescribed for patients with severe long-term pain that has not been controlled by less powerful medications. The manufacturer’s guidelines strongly state that a patient prescribed Fentanyl should be maintained at the lowest dose providing acceptable pain control. There have been numerous reported deaths involving excessive prescribed doses of Fentanyl.
Summary of a Claim A 27-year old woman who was blind and suffered from chronic headaches had been hospitalized for an unrelated illness. After having been initially followed by her family doctor, who prescribed her normal medications for ongoing headache pain, the patient’s care was assumed by a hospitalist. The hospitalist decided the patient’s headache pain had not been adequately addressed by her family doctor and prescribed 125mcg. of Fentanyl (in Duragesic patches), and gave the patient refills. Within 10 days of having been discharged, the patient was found in bed, not breathing, and was pronounced dead. Toxicology results showed the cause of death to be from an excessive amount of Fentanyl. The case was settled prior to trial.
